Famco makes a range of chimney crowns, caps, and chase covers under different product lines. The most common ones we see in Newark are the Famco FC series (fixed-louver crown caps), the Famco CC series (custom-cut metal crowns for masonry chimneys), and Famco chase covers (used on factory-built or framed chimneys with siding). The key to ordering the right one is your flue tile measurement, not your chimney’s outside dimensions. • Water staining on the ceiling or wall near the chimney. This is the symptom that gets most people to call us. It means water has gotten past the crown and is traveling down through the masonry, not necessarily through your roof.
• Spalling brick faces on the upper courses. Spalling is when the brick face flakes or pops off. It happens because water gets into the brick and freezes. In Newark winters, the freeze-thaw cycle can pop brick faces off within two seasons of crown failure.
• Visible cracks in the crown itself, especially around the flue tile. Hairline cracks widen with every winter. What looks like a small crack in August can be a 1/4-inch gap by February, and water will absolutely find it.
• Rust streaks coming down the chimney chase or crown lip. If you have a metal Famco crown, rust means the galvanized coating is gone and the metal is thinning. It will eventually rust through, and the fix is replacement, not paint.

Here’s the cost breakdown. The crown itself is $140 to $380 depending on size and material. Labor runs $200 to $400, which includes removing the old crown, cutting out the failed mortar, bedding the new crown in high-temperature sealant, and water-testing the seal. The remaining $85 to $110 covers the level-2 camera verification of the flue interior after the crown is installed, plus the photo report. DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely inspect your own crown from a ladder if you’re comfortable on one and your chimney is a single story. Look for cracks, rust, or places where the crown has pulled away from the flue tile. That inspection tells you whether you need a professional; it doesn’t tell you how bad the hidden damage is. What you cannot safely do is repair the crown yourself. Proper crown replacement means working at height, often on a sloped roof, cutting out old mortar, and bedding a new crown so it actually sheds water. One slip on a roof in January is a much bigger problem than a $600 crown repair.
