DuraFlex Damper Repair: The Newark Owner’s Guide

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

Signs Your DuraFlex Damper Repair Is Failing

• Cold air pooling at the hearth even with the damper closed. A cast-iron plate that’s warped or a frame that’s pulled away from the masonry leaves a gap. In Newark’s January wind, that gap shows up as a cold draft you can feel from across the room.
• Water streaking the firebox after heavy rain. If it’s a lock-top damper, the seal ring has usually cracked or the cable tension failed so the cap isn’t fully closing. Rain finds the opening, and it doesn’t wet the flue - it drips into the firebox.
• The handle turns without resistance. The cable or chain has snapped or detached from the damper plate. The handle spins, the plate doesn’t move, and nothing gets opened or closed.

You can safely check a few things yourself: run the handle and listen for whether the plate is still connected, look up the flue with a flashlight (when the damper is fully open), and check the firebox for water marks. But damper replacement and repair involve working inside the smoke chamber and throat area, often on a ladder with your hands above your head in a confined masonry space. A dropped damper plate or a slipped wrench inside a liner isn’t a minor problem - it can crack flue tiles or wedge the liner.
